12. SONG 12 - “Prayer For The Godless”
Is there anything more biblical than a plague? In this time of pandemic it’s hard not to ponder faith.
The numbers keep going up and up. As they do this pandemic hits closer to home for nearly every American. It's mid-July, and as the rest of the world seemingly has Covid-19 somewhat under control (save for a few places) after months of strategic lockdowns, the USA has given up the fight, defeated by its own lack of leadership. Well in excess of one hundred thousand dead. Numbers that large are impossible for humans to comprehend so it's vital to remember that each one was a brother/sister, daughter/son, or a mother or father.
One of my dearest friends and closest collaborators lost her father this week. It’s been impossible to escape the sadness I feel for her, but also the anger. Simple questions of wrong or right, of life or death, no longer seem simple. They’re raging conversations in the American zeitgeist.
We were back up on Quarry Island this week, where I recorded this song, and as my magical time in Nova Scotia comes to a close I’ve found myself dreading re-entering that zeitgeist fully. There are many better places to be in 2020 than the United States. I find myself praying for a better future. Have no doubt, I will do my part to help manifest what I can, but some things feel bigger than you, bigger than all of us even. It almost feels biblical.
I hope you enjoy and find some light in “Prayer For The Godless”.
lyrics
If any Gods are listening won’t you whisper to wind
Delicately pollinate the air with hope again
Fear, despair, and anger seem to rule the day
As thoughts and prayers, like rubber bullets, are are just fired into the fray
I’ve never been religious so why is it I feel
That God has left us long ago
The Lost just grow in zeal
As Neighbor turns on neighbor
And the children stuck at home
Their imaginary worlds are withering
From playing all alone
I have no faith to lose
But I’ll still pray for you
Hear this prayer from a Godless man
Let peace and decency grace this land
Let the ill and grieving heal again
Let love grow fiercely gently where hate now stands
It’s impossible to think that this is fate having her way
You see my best friend lost her father needlessly today
A kinder man you’ll never meet taken well before his time
I’m heartbroken and angry, still searching for a sign
That to honor him and others whose hearts were warm and bright,
While thieves and traitors strip us for parts in broad daylight
Decency and kindness will find their place again
Like cool water quelling the raging fire in the hearts of men
I have no faith to lose
But I’ll still pray for you
Hear this prayer from a Godless man
Let peace and decency grace this land
Let the ill and grieving heal again/hold a hand
Let love grow proudly where hatred stands
