My eyes are on the ground
And there's no way to slow down
Life is on repeat
It's the same shit as last week
Locked doors
Drawn shades
Cold floors
Light fades
There's no rest for the depressed anymore
When we look up
We stop looking down (no rest)
I'm trying to find the string
That for so long
Had pulled me
Locked doors
Drawn shades
Cold floors
Light fades
There's no rest for the depressed anymore
When we look up
We stop looking down (no rest)

Grateful
04:00
|
|||
You never do really lose them
There's really no letting go
It's like they're stuck between your shadow
And the very marrow of your bones
I was grey before you loved me
Or maybe I was black and blue
Now I'm a technicolor lover
I crave all kinds of hues
Lately I've been grateful for every broken heart
Cause I pieced myself together from the scraps you pulled apart
I truly hope you're well my dear
I think of calling you sometimes
Like when a hurricane is blowing in
I think about your mother rebuilding her house last time
Lately I've been grateful for every broken heart
Cause I pieced myself together from the scraps you pulled apart
Lately I've been grateful for every broken heart
Cause I pieced myself back together from the scraps you tore apart

Little Friend
04:04
|
|||
I got a friend who always is so patient
Seems to have more time for me than I’ve ever got for them
But that friend is not one for complaining
Sure they’ll whine from time to time but they always let it go
I got a friend who’s always up for trouble
Takes a hardened heart to be the one to tell them no
(Interlude)
I got a friend who always getting dirty
Seems to have a knack for coming home covered in mud
I have a friend who’s more than a little flirty
I’d almost call it shameless how they hit on everyone
I got a friend who’s never in a hurry
Sleeps most of the day and is never in a rush
Hey little friend
Your blindness to my worries
Reminds me that worries
Are only in my mind
Hey little friend
The way you look up to me
Helps me live more truly
Just to see me through your eyes
I got a friend who’s really not that picky
Seems so satisfied when you just throw her a bone
I got a friend whose life is not so tricky
Sometimes I swear I'd give it all just to live that life
Hey little friend
Your blindness to my worries
Reminds me that worries
Are only in my mind
Hey little friend
The way you look up to me
Helps me live more truly
Just to see me through your eyes

Week 4, Song 4! “Spotlight” - with Aimee Bayles + Camellia Hartman
In this weird time it’s easy for things to blend together. Day into night. Anxiety into apathy. Fear into hope. Dreams into waking.
This song was the hardest of the bunch to write in some ways and yet a lot of the heavy lifting was done subconsciously. I quite literally wrote this one in a dream.
I’ve been having very vivid dreams. Probably due to all the fresh air and silence up here on Quarry island.
This particular dream was a writing session with friends Lyle Divinsky and Alex Bilowitz. The song itself was kind of a funny pop song we were writing for a 20 year old girl but I couldn’t get the melody I woke up with out of my head so I took it to the piano and let it simmer.
The song ended up being a reflection on time, mortality, and how ego can get in the way of progress and creation. Seeing as I have a project that’s my name + Band this is largely self-reflection. All this death and sickness had me wondering not only what you’d do if you had a known limited amount of time on this earth but what we’d do and create if we were immortal.
A handful of incredibly talented music makers lent their talents to this one. Aimee Bayles singing harmonies and Camellia Hartman, back this week on the violin. Danielle Warman was a mix advisor.
I hope you enjoy this one.

LYRICS
We were young
But we weren’t stupid
We had about a thousand dreams we were pursuing
Some we lost along the way
Some couldn’t do it
Some took comfort in just knowing they’re not through yet
We were broke
But we weren’t bruised yet
Living a life so thick you could almost chew it
But then our needs changed
And the greed came
And we cared a bit too much to be the big name
What would we make if we only had time?
What we would do if we knew we’d never die?
Cut the spotlight
With a hot knife
Don’t worry bout what you’re supposed sound like
Turn your flash off
Take the mask off
Why not live like you’ve got more than this one life
And I can make life
I can take life
How’s that make anything but God-like?
It’s the sand that’s
In my hourglass
Grain by grain dripping into my past
I can sculpt clay
I can brick lay
I could leave monuments to decency in my wake
You’d be amazed
What gets accomplished
If nobody’s worried about taking the credit
Cut the spotlight
With a hot knife
Don’t worry bout what you’re supposed sound like
Turn your flash off
Take the mask off
Why not live like you’ve got more than this one life

Low
02:08
|
|||
Let me be down
Let me wade in the water and trust that I won’t drown
Let me bury my head so deep I hear no sound
Just let me be down
Let me be low (just let me be)
Let me crawl on my hands and knees through weeds alone (down on my knees)
If I stay too long I trust you’ll let me know (trust in me)
But let me be low
Let me be grey (Let me be grey)
Like a new moon rising low on a winter day (just for the day)
When you summon your strength just to show your face (I’ll find my strength)
Let me be grey
If you’re low (If you are low)
Know the river won’t run til it reaches valley floor (I’ll wait below)
My hands outstretched as I wait on the muddy shore (with hands to hold)
If you’re low
Let me be down (Just wait for me)
Let me wade in the water and trust that I won’t drown (wait patiently)
Let me bury my head so deep I hear no sound (I’ll lift back up)
Just let me be down

What I'm Doing Right
04:40
|
|||
Line up people with your empty bowls
It’s two for one if you sell your soul
Grab a broom go sweep that floor
For 7.25, not a single cent more
Here’s a rag, better wipe your brow
(Thank you sir, that’s very kind to allow)
Something nasty’s going around
(Yes sir, sure hope the fever goes down)
I believe in paying your debt
(We believe in blood and sweat)
Not this life, maybe in the next
(We’re doing our doing our doing our best)
All my people there standing in line
(Used to cost a nickel and now it’s a dime)
Get your hands off what’s rightfully mine
(Wait a minute you said you’re on our side)
I can see you from here, you’re hardly trying
(Seven days straight’s little hard on the mind)
Don’t you know there’s worse things in life than dying
Are you hearing what the man just said?
He’ll bleed us dry for a loaf of bread
Before you stand up and join the fight
Take a good long look at what you know is right
So tell me, tell me what I’m doing right
When you tell me what I’m doing wrong
Grab those clippers, better get to work
(Trying to stand up but the fevers getting worse)
I’m teeing off at four o’clock
Doing our best but the lungs still hurt)
Quit that coughing, what’d I say
(Don’t worry sir we’ll be okay)
We’re not gonna play with blood on the fairway
(Breaking our back so you can play)
Are you hearing what the man just said?
He’ll make his dollar if it leaves us dead
Before you stand up and join the fight
Take a good long look at what is wrong and right
Tell me, tell me what I’m doing right
Tell me, tell me what I’m doing right
Wait now people, now where’d ya go
(We’re leaving, we’re leaving, not taking no more)
But this here paper says I own your soul
(That’s some dice we’re willing to roll)
Come on back I’ll give ya something sweet
(We’re marching ourselves on down the street)
But who’s gonna stay and wash my feet?
(We’re marching, we’re marching on down the street)
But who’s gonna cook and clean?
(We’re marching ourselves on down the street)
How’m I gonna get to my four o’clock meeting?
We’re marching, we’re marching on down the street
We’re marching, we’re marching on down the street
We’re marching, we’re marching on down the street

Oh, Michelle
02:32
|
|||
Oh Michelle, what I’d give to be with you
To be bedside holding your hand
Oh Michelle, when this nightmare is over
You’re the first one I’ll see when I can
Oh Michelle, though you’ve waned in your late days
There’s still mischief and mirth in your eyes
So Michelle, stay well til I get there
I could not bear to not say goodbye
See, I’d scrap every plan
To be losing a hand
To your gin rummy wily ways
Oh Michelle, though you’ve lost most your memories
There are still a few in your care
Like the day you walked down the aisle
Toward a kind man who’s brown eyes I share

WEEK 8/SONG 8: "Nothing Today"
This week's song started as a struggle, and ultimately the song itself reflects that. As we enter month three of the pandemic and it's clear this isn't going away anytime soon I think a lot of people are feeling fatigue. Those without work have the worries and stress that comes with that and those with work are feeling overwhelmed now that there's no work/home separation. Everyone is worried about what the future holds.
This past weekend, my hosts, the Frasers, took us on a fishing excursion to a remote lake front cabin. As much as Quarry Island is a paradise itself, it was soothing to be entirely off the grid and have nothing to do that day but be fish, cook, relax, and be fully present. The cover photo was taken by Adam Fraser on our first night at the camp. That’s me fishing at sunset.
It was an absolute luxury to unplug, but coming back and being reminded of what’s happening was hard.
In seeking inspiration, I ultimately went back to the Hammond organ that's been so essential to this project. The initial idea I had in mind was to create a piece for just me, solo, at the instrument. In the end I couldn't resist some piano and percussion but the whole... more

LYRICS:
I don’t wanna do nothing
Not today
Except stay inside and count the drops of rain
I don’t wanna do nothing
No, not today
Have to drag me up with a twelve foot steel link chain
Don’t wanna do nothing, not at all
You see it’s hard enough to have to watch the fall
Don’t wanna do nothing, nothing today
layaway Gonna put the hour hand on layaway
Nothing today, nothing today
Nothing today, nothing today
I don’t wanna do nothing, nothing today
Someone else step in and take my place
I don’t wanna do nothing, not today
The grind has ground me down into a paste
I don’t wanna do nothing, not today
But I’m gonna get up and go do it anyway
I don't wanna do nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing today
I don't wanna do nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing today
I don’t wanna do nothing, not today
Please Mr. Sunshine, stay away
Don’t make me feel guilty for the way I feel today
Let me stay inside and count the shades of grey

Breathe Easy
05:04
|
|||
n the fading light of the solstice evening
As our van passed under
The Mt. Hood leaves
And that proudest sun
Threw it’s final rays
You felt clarity through the normal haze
You could breathe easy
Breathe easy, cause you’re doing fine
It just took a midnight sun to remind
You’re doing fine
VERSE 2:
As the moon rose low
Over the Tennessee
Down in Chattanooga
My bandmates and me,
To not get swept away,
We swam full speed
And in that moonlit water
I saw clearly
It’s not where you’re traveling to
Or if you arrive
It's if who’s swimming next to you
Makes you feel alive
So breathe easy, you’re doing fine
Just breathe easy, you’re doing fine
It might take a moonlight swim to remind you, but you’re doing fine
If you’re spinning round
Like a wheel on the road
You may find like me
Your highs turn into lows
But if you keep on moving
You may get where you're trying to go
Keep moving, it's not all in your control
Just breath easy, you’re doing fine
Breathe easy, you’re doing fine

My Son
04:19
|
|||
I stayed up late
Trying your phone
My heart sunk deeper with each ringtone
I froze in place
Then shook with rage
Just want my hands on your sweet face
I’ll keep you safe
That much I swore
But feared I’d lose you to this silent war
My Son. My Son. Oh lord what have they done
They shot you down
On Friday night
When these tears dry I swear I’ll fight
I might be scared
I might feel lost
But ain’t nobody else gonna bear the cost
Ain’t nobody else gonna hang your photo up on the supermarket wall
Or even really search for truth at all
My son. My son. Oh lord, what have you done with my son.

Prayer For The Godless
04:42
|
|||
If any Gods are listening won’t you whisper to wind
Delicately pollinate the air with hope again
Fear, despair, and anger seem to rule the day
As thoughts and prayers, like rubber bullets, are are just fired into the fray
I’ve never been religious so why is it I feel
That God has left us long ago
The Lost just grow in zeal
As Neighbor turns on neighbor
And the children stuck at home
Their imaginary worlds are withering
From playing all alone
I have no faith to lose
But I’ll still pray for you
Hear this prayer from a Godless man
Let peace and decency grace this land
Let the ill and grieving heal again
Let love grow fiercely gently where hate now stands
It’s impossible to think that this is fate having her way
You see my best friend lost her father needlessly today
A kinder man you’ll never meet taken well before his time
I’m heartbroken and angry, still searching for a sign
That to honor him and others whose hearts were warm and bright,
While thieves and traitors strip us for parts in broad daylight
Decency and kindness will find their place again
Like cool water quelling the raging fire in the hearts of men
I have no faith to lose
But I’ll still pray for you
Hear this prayer from a Godless man
Let peace and decency grace this land
Let the ill and grieving heal again/hold a hand
Let love grow proudly where hatred stands
