WEEK 9/SONG 9 - Breathe Easy”
I don’t have any tattoos. I’ve long thought that if I did, it would be a lower case “b” and “e” on my left wrist. A physical reminder to “breathe easy”.
Making a living as an artist in New York is no stress free life. Likewise, being on tour (which I’ve spent about a quarter of the last seven years doing) is a grueling existence.
I try to be centered; to live in the moment; to be present. But often I’m riddled with anxiety and worry about what’s next, what’s around the corner. I think the whole world feels that way right now.
This song is about being so struck by the power and beauty of a moment that you can’t help but be fully present. When your life feels like a scene from a movie for a moment. Each vignette in this song is from moment on tour in recent years. Something I look forward to getting back to when this is all over.
I recorded this at the Fraser’s absolutely gorgeous baby grand piano in Halifax (back to the city for a couple days). I really wanted a live performance of the son. I believe this is take 11 of over 20.
The cover art is a photo I took in Brooklyn this past Fall. It’s taken in a place that’s a bit of a sanctuary to me, it’s a place where the sound of the waves hitting the rocks is louder than the noise of the city. It’s where I go to breathe.
Happy Friday. Hope you like song #9.
lyrics
In the fading light of the solstice evening
As our van passed under
The Mt. Hood leaves
And that proudest sun
Threw it’s final rays
You felt clarity through the normal haze
You could breathe easy
Breathe easy, cause you’re doing fine
It just took a midnight sun to remind
You’re doing fine
VERSE 2:
As the moon rose low
Over the Tennessee
Down in Chattanooga
My bandmates and me,
To not get swept away,
We swam full speed
And in that moonlit water
I saw clearly
It’s not where you’re traveling to
Or if you arrive
It's if who’s swimming next to you
Makes you feel alive
So breathe easy, you’re doing fine
Just breathe easy, you’re doing fine
It might take a moonlight swim to remind you, but you’re doing fine
If you’re spinning round
Like a wheel on the road
You may find like me
Your highs turn into lows
But if you keep on moving
You may get where you're trying to go
Keep moving, it's not all in your control
Just breath easy, you’re doing fine
Breathe easy, you’re doing fine
