This song is a tribute to a dear friend who in no small way inspired the origin of this page. When I found myself quarantined in beautiful Nova Scotia earlier this year with access to an inspiring sonic space filled with a number of instruments I decided to challenge myself to writing, recording, and releasing a song a week for the duration of my time there. It was a herculean creative effort that I found both incredibly exhilarating but also exhausting.
My friend Jesse Lindsey has done what I did for 13 weeks for ten years. TEN YEARS! Last week was his 10th anniversary of writing, recording, and releasing a song a week for a decade. 523 songs in total.

To celebrate this monumental milestone a number of our mutual friends recorded tributes to him. I ended up choosing his song from week 492 (!), called "Holy Signs 2". I was drawn to this song the first time I heard it. Jesse is a poet, able to find deep meaning in distinctive imagery and unexpected metaphors. I find his writing to be both beautifully simple and subtly complex. I think this song encapsulates that perfectly. It’s about finding, or at least looking for, meaning in the little images of life.
Lending her incredible talents to this cover project is Aimee Bayles, my creative partner in the folk band Hawthorne.
This song is the first I’ve produced entirely in my apartment in Brooklyn since returning from Canada. The first of many I suspect.
Enjoy “Holy Signs 2”, a tribute to my dear friends’ incredible creativity and determination.
